The split between the two groups began during the period of the Babylonian exile and especially during the return. The returned exiles from Babylon are the fore-bearers of Judaism as we know it today, whereas those who have remained on the land have been cut off from this group. The others have changed from Israelites to Jews, and pursued their ethos of learning until this day.
