The Annual Spiro Tribute Lecture

FEATHERS IN THE WIND

In this year's Annual Spiro Tribute Lecture, Dr Sarah Abu-Kaf will talk about educating women and the Bedouin Arab society, higher education among Bedouin Arab young women – difficulties, challenges and possibilities.

Dr. Sarah Abu-Kaf is a faculty member and lecturer in cross-cultural psychology at Ben Gurion Univerisity. Dr. Abu Kaf was the first woman in her Arab Bedouin village to attend university. She and her sister were the first women in their village to obtain doctoral degrees. Sarah will present insights into her own journey and the issues confronted by many Bedouin women today. She is a strong advocate of women’s education and how they are faced with the challenge of a patriarchal society that doesn’t always encourage, or enable, women to attend university.

The Annual Spiro Tribute Lecture is sponsored by the Pears Foundation to celebrate the tremendous work of Robin and Nitza Spiro and their contribution to Jewish cultural life in Britain over more than 30 years.
