Dorich House, located in the Kingston side of Richmond Park, was built in the style of 1930s' modernism. In November 1936, the unfinished house became the home of Hon Richard Hare and his wife, Latvian sculptor, Dora Gordine, who built and designed it themselves, creating a rough, simple exterior and surprisingly cosy interior influenced by the art of China and South Asia where Dora used to work in early 1930s. The couple's passion for creating and collecting art transformed the house into a real museum, exhibiting not only Dora's own works (mostly bronze sculptures) but also unique pieces of Russian Imperial Art collected by her husband throughout his life.
The Spiro Ark is inviting you to participate in this fascinating visit, which presents the opportunity to see the major collection of Dora Gordine's sculptures, stunning collection of art and artefacts from Imperial Russia, and the unique surroundings of the couple's restored studio home. The visit will also include a short film, lecture about Modernism in Dorich House and free refreshments.
