ANARCHISM, CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE AND PROTEST AS JEWISH VALUES

Contact: 020 7 794 4655 Teacher : Dr Harris Bor

To honour Professor Sam Cohen’s Memory, this year’s lecture will be delivered by Dr Harris Bor

Professor Sam Cohen’s annual memorial lectures have been impressive by the choice of speakers and by the variety of eye-opening topics which have been presented.  Every year is a special occasion when the family from Israel meets friends and relatives in the UK and the Spiro Ark has the privilege of organising these inspiring annual gatherings.

In this age of political change as challenge to the establishment, we might ask:

How does Judaism view radical and political protests?  When is civil disobedience morally justified?  How should the law treat those who engage in civil disobedience?

In this year’s lecture, Dr Harris Bor will consider Jewish attitudes to these questions from the Bible to Buber and beyond, and ask whether Judaism should be encouraging us to leave the Synagogue for the street?

Dr Harris Bor is a Commercial Barrister and Adjunct Faculty Member of the London School of Jewish Studies.

The Spiro Ark feels extremely honoured at having the task of organising the Memorial lectures in memory of Professor Sam Cohen on an annual basis.

The Cohen family and its branches have supported the educational and cultural work of the Spiro Ark for decades.  This is a small token of appreciation so that we can give back to these loyal friends of ours.

We look forward to welcoming you.
