Surrealism, which was officially launched in 1924 in France with the publication of the Surrealist Manifesto, rapidly became an international artistic and literary movement reaching Western and Eastern Europe, North and South America, the West Indies, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. However, it has always been maintained that Surrealism never impacted literature in Israel. This is in spite of the fact that Modern Hebrew literature was clearly influenced by other forms of modernism such as Expressionism and Futurism.
Dr Giulia Miller challenges this assumption in her forthcoming monograph Reconfiguring Surrealism in Modern Hebrew Literature: Yitzhak Oren and Yitzhak Orpaz. This monograph is based upon the doctorate that Giulia Miller completed at Cambridge under the supervision of the late Dr Risa Domb. Dr Domb was an inspiring teacher and mentor and supported this project with great love and enthusiasm. This launch is given in her memory and honour.

Giulia Miller is Affiliated Lecturer in Modern Hebrew at the University of Cambridge. She holds a First Class BA in Jewish History from UCL and an MPhil and a PhD in Modern Hebrew literature from the University of Cambridge. She also teaches at the Spiro Ark.
