Vanessa Paloma is a singer, performer, scholar and writer specializing in Judeo-Spanish women's songs and their role in Sephardic communities. Internationally known for this repertoire, she has performed and lectured on five continents.
Paloma has performed repeatedly in the World Festival for Sacred Music in Los Angeles. Recent performances were at the Sephardic Music Festival of New York 2010, Limmud UK, Mawazine Rabat 2011, Tangier American Legation Museum, Tangier Trance Festival in Zürich, Switzerland, Center for Jewish History in New York, Women's Voices Festival in Tetouan, University of California Berkeley, the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles, Mekor Haim synagogue in Porto, at the French Consulate of Tangier, and at the American Consulate in Casablanca among others.
She has been featured on American, Moroccan, Spanish, Italian and Colombian television and radio.
Paloma published her second book in 2011, entitled The Mountain, the Desert and the Pomegranate: stories from Morocco and Beyond. She is currently writing her third book, an analysis on Gender and Power in Judeo-Spanish women's songs from Northern Morocco.
Currently based in Casablanca, she continues her research with the remaining Jewish community. She also works closely with Moroccan musicians who have maintained musical traditions from Al-Andalus.
