Can Israeli Arabs and Jews co-exist? Can Religious and Secular Jews live together in Israel? How absorbed are Israel's New (and not so New) immigrants in Israeli Society? Israeli Anthropologist Dr. Rhonda Sofer will discuss Israel's Multi- Cultural Challenges in the 21st Century. Dr. Sofer was born and educated in America and made Aliyah in 1973. For the last decade Dr. Sofer has been Director of the Multicultural Educational Resource Center at Gordon College of Education in Haifa and involved in multicultural education and training of thousands of Israeli Hebrew and Arabic speaking students of education and teachers for cultural diversity. Dr. Sofer has been involved in a wide range of educational projects which include empowering Ethiopians to be teachers in Israel, directing a mentoring program for Ethiopian children in elementary schools, combating racism through teacher training about the Holocaust and directing tolerance education programs in Hebrew and Arabic speaking schools in Northern Israel. Dr. Sofer has also been involved in international projects such as a program training Ukrainian staff who work at the one of the only centers for children with special needs at the Educational Resource Center (ERC) at Beit Channa in Dnepropetrovsk in the Ukraine and an international project involving strategies for the cultural diversity training of teachers. Dr. Sofer's 30 years of applied anthropological experience in Israel offers a unique opportunity of understanding Israeli Society in the 21st century.
