Klezmer Klub, the longstanding London Klezmer band are developing, performing and have recorded a new CD 'Whitechapel, Mayn Vaytchapel' which contains a set of Yiddish songs about London. The lyrics include glimpses into the history of areas of London and the experiences of the Yiddish-speaking Jewish communities. They are filled with names of places, people, activities, feelings and the politics of what was once a vibrant Yiddish society in the East End of London. The songs are varied, from the descriptions of hardship and poverty and the experience of being immigrants, to the light-hearted and upbeat expressions of street life. Some songs were written by famous writers, Morris Winchevsky, Itzik Manger and Chaim Tauber. Almost all have very rarely, if ever, been heard.
