The extraordinary history of a fruit we don't eat, whose ugliness is a proof of its beauty, that has broken communities, caused Rabbinical rifts and holds the secret of eternity.
The etrog that is held and blessed on Sukkot is a perfect symbol of the mystery, the beauty and perhaps the craziness of being Jewish. An etrog has been a rare much sought-after object for many communities over time. The laws, political intrigue, folklore and passions it has aroused over the centuries are extraordinary. We will journey through the Bible, Josephus, early Mediterranean horticulture, Kuttenplan tax, and Corfu riots. Tradition called it 'the orb of the world'. In its history we can trace our own story and our own survival.
