The German Bauhaus School, which combined arts and crafts, was created in 1909 by Walter Gropius. It responded to modern planning developed in Europe in the early 20th century and created a style of buildings characterised by flat roofs, smooth facades and symmetrical cubic structures in white or light beige which were often broken only by round balconies.
The situation in Germany in 1930's forced some of the graduates of this school to flee the country and come to Tel Aviv, which at that time, was a relatively new city, open to modern ideas. The Bauhaus style received a 'warm welcome' and resulted in the creation of sculptural, economic and functional structures, built with modest means and giving the capital its new name: 'The White City'. In the 1980's the White City was eventually recognized as a cultural treasure. A conservation plan has been created by the municipality of Tel Aviv, and the historical buildings which have been restored are being protected by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site.
The Bauhaus Centre in Tel Aviv with the vision of its director, Micha Gross, initiated this fascinating photographic exhibition and the Spiro Ark is pleased at being chosen to present it. The exhibits show 25 structures, which are a representation of the preserved buildings.

The exhibition will be accompanied by many other events connected to Tel Aviv, including: 'The White City--Early Tel Aviv'- evening of songs and stories presented by Cantor Norman Falah Cohen and Robert Rietti (15 Sept), 'Discover Tel Aviv the Way You Have Never Known It' - panel discussion by Colin Shindler, Linda Grant, and Dalia Lichfield (11 Oct), a lecture by Prof. Joachim Schlör (13 Oct), and two visits: to 2 Willow Road (15 Sept.) and to Dorich House (12 October).
